What are some of the characteristics of Autism?

Persons with autism may possess some of the following characteristics in various combinations and in varying degrees of severity:

  • Inappropriate laughing or giggling
  • No real fear of dangers
  • Apparent insensitivity to pain
  • May not want to cuddle
  • May avoid eye contact
  • May prefer to be alone
  • Difficulty with basic communication
  • Struggle with use of social skills
  • Inappropriate attachments to objects
  • Echoes words/phrases
  • Spins objects or self
  • Intense tantrums
  • High need for structure & routine

Objectives:

  • To provide assistance to children, families and educational entities in providing exemplary services to children who show signs of autism.
  • To assist in the identification of children with Autism and other spectrum disorders.
  • To provide classroom and home support systems to children and families of children with Autism.
  • To provide educational training.
  • To provide educational networking opportunities.
  • To provide parents with outside resources and support through training and networking.

Steps to Referral

1. School staff obtain parental permission for AIT Team observation.

2. Staff fills out AIT Referral Google Form.

3. AIT Team member(s) conduct an observation.

4. Recommendations shared with the parents and school team.

5. Follow-up and next steps determined.
