Winfield High School is excited to announce the implementation of several new policies designed to enhance school security, ensure student safety, and improve the learning environment. The policies, which include updated student identification requirements, a ban on cell phone usage during school hours, and revised parking regulations, are part of a district-wide initiative aimed at fostering an atmosphere where students can thrive both academically and socially.
A Comprehensive Approach to Student Success
Understanding the critical role technology plays in students' lives, WHS has introduced a district-wide policy that restricts cell phone usage during school hours, including AirPods and smartwatches. This policy follows extensive analysis by a dedicated committee of educators, parents, and administrators who evaluated the impact of technology on student performance and school culture. “Understanding the role that cell phones play in our students' lives is crucial, and I fully support the dedicated efforts of the committee that worked diligently to craft our new policy,” explained Superintendent Reiser. “Their hard work was essential in creating a balanced approach that enhances learning while addressing the challenges posed by technology in our classrooms.”
A Commitment to Focused Learning
Principal Rhonda Hockenbury emphasized Winfield High School’s commitment to focused learning: “At WHS, we are committed to creating an environment where focused learning can thrive. By implementing strong restrictions on cell phone use, including AirPods and smartwatches, we aim to minimize distractions and enhance engagement in the classroom.” This policy not only reduces distractions but also helps prevent issues such as cyberbullying and inappropriate online interactions during school hours.
Supported by the Board of Education
Kinnie Ledford, Board of Education President, expressed support for these initiatives: “Overall, these new district policies are designed to foster a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment where students can thrive academically and socially and have the support of the USD 465 Board of Education.”
"Disconnect to Connect" — Embracing Change and Innovation
"Disconnect to Connect" underscores the school's commitment to innovative thinking and positive change. By reducing reliance on personal technology during school hours, WHS is paving the way for a more connected and engaged student body. The policies can be found here as well as the district website's home page and in each school's student and staff handbook. WHS encourages any questions regarding these policies to be directed to the respective school principals. Winfield High School is looking forward to the positive impact these changes will have on its school community and is excited for a future where students can "Disconnect to Connect" and embrace the full potential of their educational experience.
