USD 465 is thrilled to announce the appointment of Mr. Zachary Lawrence as the new Director of Special Education for Cowley County. Mr. Lawrence brings a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to advancing educational opportunities for all students.
Mr. Lawrence currently serves as an Assistant Director in a special education cooperative, where he has excelled in administrative leadership roles at both district and building levels. His professional journey showcases steady growth and heightened responsibilities, encompassing HR oversight, legal advising, and the administration of a Day School program. Backed by numerous recommendations, Mr. Lawrence is fully equipped to take charge of the cooperative's special education program with immediate impact.
A Passion for Education and Community
Mr. Lawrence, a 1998 graduate of Winfield High School, expresses a deep commitment to ensuring that children of all backgrounds and abilities in Cowley County receive the support, education, and training they need to become fulfilled and independent members of their community. He believes public schools offer an indispensable service to children and families.
An alumnus of Kansas State University and Wichita State University, Mr. Lawrence has dedicated his career to special education, with a focus on students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. His professional journey includes roles as a special education teacher, building leader, and district administrator across several Kansas communities. When the opportunity arose to return to Cowley County, Mr. Lawrence eagerly embraced it.

A Vision for the Future
In his role as a special education administrator, Mr. Lawrence has strengthened curriculum for students with complex needs and improved collaboration between schools and mental health providers through initiatives like the Kansas School Mental Health Initiative. He has also served as a regional co-chair for the Kansas Association of Special Education Administrators, advocating at the state level for equitable school funding and the welfare of children in state custody.
